On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Jonny Coleman and Anne Orchier, who are organizers from NOlympics LA. NOlympics LA is a coalition leading a campaign to oppose the 2024 Olympic bid of Los Angeles. It was launched by members of the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and includes and is supported by a growing number of organizations and individuals. We spoke with Jonny Coleman and Anne Orchier by phone Monday. "A few of the key issues that we've called out on our platform include accelerated gentrification and displacement," said Anne Orchier. "L.A. has one of the worst affordable housing crises in the nation. Our homelessness crisis is at pretty much an all-time high. We just found out in the last few days, the latest counts for homelessness came out. And we're up 23 percent from last year." Hosting the Olympics, she said, would shift "away attention and resources from dealing with those issues" and "would exacerbate and accelerate those issues." She also explained how the Olympics has been used to increase the "militarization of police" and "beefing up surveillance capacities and weaponization of the local police forces." In addition to these issues, Jonny Coleman explained how they are not opposed to Los Angeles hosting the Olympics because they oppose sports, but because they oppose "the money, and the power, and the abuse of power that goes with the billions of dollars that come with the Olympics and that's changing hands." It is "unchecked capitalism where there is literally no regulation, that corrupts the sports," he said. While such corruption has been well documented in major sports organizations like FIFA and the NFL, "I think the Olympics does it on a much, much grander scale than either of those two." We also discussed the growth of the international movement against the Olympics; how hosting an Olympics does not benefit youth sports; the exploitation of many athletes who are not paid while sports organizers profit from their efforts; the many criminal elements running international sport; the myth that the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was successful for the people of L.A.; the hundreds of millions of dollars which the taxpayers of Los Angeles and California will be on the hook for with the inevitable cost overruns; why the Olympics has become "historically unpopular" and its "brand is failing"; why they do not want to "dump" the Olympics on the other 2024 bid city of Paris; models for alternative sporting events; what people can do; and much, much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Raul Ramirez of the Catch Wrestling Alliance. Our main topic was the 2017 Frank Gotch World Catch Wrestling Tournament. This event, which had its inaugural edition last year, has emerged as the biggest and most important tournament in the world in catch wrestling. This year's edition will take place Saturday, July 15, at Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa. Humboldt is the hometown of the legendary wrestler Frank Gotch, who was world heavyweight champion in the early 1900s when professional wrestling was still a real sport. We spoke with Raul Ramirez by phone Wednesday. This event will feature "authentic catch-as-catch-can wrestling, like the way it was done in the 1800s and early 1900s. You can go back and see the old rulebooks," he said. "Basically there are no points, and you can win by pin or submission." Competition is planned for five men's weight classes and a women's division whose format will be determined depending on how many women sign up for the event. In addition, this year there will be an absolute division open to the winners in each men's weight class. The winner of the absolute division will take home a $500 cash prize. Matches will be one fall each with a 20-minute time limit. If time expires before there is a pin or submission, to keep the tournaments going, a winner will be chosen by officials based on who was the most dominant wrestler. Among the wrestlers so far slated to compete are Curran Jacobs, Travis Wiuff, Christopher Morales, Nicholas "The Giant" Caggia, and Qin Yunquan. We discussed the development of this event, the differences and similarities between catch wrestling and other styles like American folkstyle and freestyle, plans to live stream and record the video of this event, how more schools and wrestlers are training in catch wrestling than previously, the need to revive real professional wrestling with catch rules, his teaching catch wrestling to many grapplers and wrestlers in Singapore, the involvement of many members of the wrestling community in Iowa in this event, the need for drug testing in catch wrestling, and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the victory by Errol Spence Jr. this past Saturday, May 27, over Kell Brook to capture the IBF welterweight belt and vault himself to the top tier of the welterweight division. In what started as a close and competitive fight, the end came at 1:47 of the 11th round, when a battered Brook took a knee and indicated to the referee that he could no longer see well enough to continue because of an injury to his left eye. This fight took place in front of 27,000 fans at the Bramall Lane football ground in Sheffield, U.K., and was shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and live in the U.S. on Showtime. The 27-year-old Spence, now 22-0 with 19 KOs, faces a bright future. But for the 31-year-old Brook, now 31-2 with 25 KOs, what does the future hold? Brook has now lost his last two fights, the only two losses of his professional career. After fighting at middleweight last year against the unbeaten slugger Gennady Golovkin, he had to have surgery to repair his right eye socket, with a metal plate being inserted into his face. Now he has lost again due to an eye injury, this time to his left eye, and will face surgery and all the uncertainties that accompany it once again. So what will, or should, happen after taking a knee to end his fight with Spence? (Photo by Amanda Westcott/Showtime.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and unbeaten challenger Errol Spence Jr., who fight this Saturday, May 27. We also comment on this past Saturday's full day of fights, and why the David Benavidez-Rogelio "Porky" Medina fight deserved the honor of being known as the televised fight of the night. Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) and Spence (21-0, 18 KOs) face each other in the main event of a card at the Bramall Lane football stadium in Sheffield, U.K., which will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and live in the U.S. on Showtime. The winner will likely be regarded as the top fighter in the talent-rich welterweight division. We spoke with both Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. on a recent media conference call, in which they both promised victory. This past Saturday, May 20, there were several important fights around the world. Gervonta Davis, Gary Russell Jr., and the masterful Terence Crawford all had dominating performances to retain their respective belts. There was also a disgraceful robbery, in which Rances Barthelemy was given a gift and undeserved decision win over Kiryl Relikh, and a riot in and outside the ring following Jose Uzcategui's disqualification loss against Andre Dirrell after he hit him after the bell sounded in the eighth round and Dirrell could not continue. The high point of the night took place in the main event of a PBC card on FS1 which many may have passed up hoping that for a change HBO, which had its telecast on at the same time, would present something noteworthy. The PBC on FS1 card was headlined by what turned out to be an eight-round, non-stop battle between budding star, the 20-year-old David Benadivez, and veteran Rogelio "Porky" Medina, who many remember last year gave IBF super middleweight champ James DeGale all he could handle. For Benavidez, this was his toughest opponent yet, and in what was billed as a 168-pound title eliminator, he established himself as both a legitimate contender and a must-see fighter. We discussed why the Benavidez-Medina fight was fight of the night, the need for this fight to be replayed both on TV and online, the need for PBC to set up its own online video service showing full fights, how HBO and his promoters have completely botched the marketing and promotion of Terence Crawford, and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with unbeaten fighters Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh, who face each other Saturday, May 20, and discussed the current situation regarding boxing on TV in the U.S. Making the first defense of his IBF 130-pound belt, the 22-year-old Gervonta Davis (17-0, 16 KOs) hits the road to face 31-year-old British challenger Liam Walsh (21-0, 14 KOs) at London's Copper Box Arena, the site of the 2012 Olympic boxing. This fight will be shown live in the U.K. on BT Sport on BoxNation, and live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh on their recent media conference call, in which both fighters confidently but respectfully predicted victory. May 20 is a busy day for boxing, as BoxNation, Showtime, HBO, and the PBC on FS1 will also have more televised fights. We discussed the ongoing decline of HBO's boxing program, the growth of Showtime's boxing program including its schedule of international fights such as Davis-Walsh, what might happen television-wise if there is a Joshua-Klitschko rematch, and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses Saturday's stinkers involving Joseph Parker vs. Raz Cojanu and Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Also discussed is the continuing tragedy involving Prichard Colon, who remains in a coma following a televised fight on October 17, 2015, and whose family has filed a $50 million lawsuit stemming from his treatment during and after that fight. We also examine, in light of boxing's ongoing history of purposeful mismatches and tragedies, why many people still follow it. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell. He is also one of the writers featured in the new book The Bittersweet Science. Our main topic was the April 29 heavyweight title unification fight between the 27-year-old IBF champion Anthony Joshua (18-0, 18 KOs) and the 41-year-old former champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs). This fight, which is also for a vacant WBA title, takes place at the sold-out 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium in London. It will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and in Germany on RTL, with record viewership likely on each. In the U.S., Showtime will telecast it live, with HBO later showing a replay. We spoke with Charles Farrell by phone Thursday. While both of us expect Joshua to defeat Klitschko by knockout, we see this fight as having far more significance than just a heavyweight title bout. "For one thing, it establishes the next dominant heavyweight champion of the world, at a time when there really hasn't been one for a period of time," Charles Farrell said. "But maybe more importantly than that, it will serve I think as the kind of coming out party for a fighter who has all of the attributes necessary to become one of the, certainly one of the most famous fighters in history, very conceivably the highest paid fighter in history. "And a guy who if he's promoted -- he barely has to be promoted in the U.K. They're waiting for him. This is a coronation of sorts. "But this is a kind of celebrity that can easily translate worldwide. "So I think that this fight, if it goes the way most people expect that it will go, heralds not only a new heavyweight champion, a significant new heavyweight champion, but a new era in terms of money-making possibility." We discussed how the U.K. has once again become a major place for boxing; why we expect this fight to be a decisive and likely quick knockout victory for Joshua; Klitschko's awful performance in his last fight in November 2015 against Tyson Fury; how Joshua is well-schooled as a fighter and has been prepared for his role as an international superstar; potential future opponents for Joshua including WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder of the U.S. and a possible huge fight between them in New York or Las Vegas; what should happen if Tyson Fury returns to fighting; why Anthony Joshua is reminiscent of Joe Louis; the parochialism of much of the American boxing media and fan base in not recognizing Joshua's full potential; and much, much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with welterweight contenders Shawn Porter and Andre Berto, and WBC 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo and challenger Charles Hatley, who fight Saturday, April 22, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, on Showtime Championship Boxing, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. We spoke with these fighters on recent media conference calls. We also discuss the plague of fake boxing news, especially in America, which seeks to favor the dying HBO boxing shows, disparage the growing Premier Boxing Champions series, and also spread propaganda aimed at promoting some fighters, explicitly or implicitly, as "great white hopes". On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with the unbeaten heavyweight who is the most avoided fighter in that division, Luis "King Kong" Ortiz. With a record of 27-0 and 23 KOs, his next fight will be April 22 when he faces journeyman Derric Rossy (31-12, 15 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as part of the card headlined by the Shawn Porter vs. Andre Berto fight. Exact TV details will be announced soon, but it will either be shown on Showtime or Showtime Extreme in the U.S. We spoke with Luis Ortiz at a press conference in New York on March 30. He had just days before signed with advisor/manager Al Haymon and was still working out his plans, although he did repeatedly challenge the various heavyweight beltholders including Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, and Joseph Parker. We open with an analysis of why Luis Ortiz has been so avoided over his career including the stagnated state of the heavyweight division, how the promoters he has previously worked with have failed to market him and move him to a title fight, his sparring with MMA fighter "King" Mo Lawal, the surreal atmosphere at this New York press conference, and more.
