On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Heath Sims, who has just been named to head the wrestling program at the top martial arts training organization in Asia, the Singapore-based Evolve MMA.
Heath joins the Evolve staff with a long history of success in wrestling. He won numerous championships and tournaments in wrestling, culminating with earning a berth on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman wrestling. Afterwards he turned to fighting in MMA, including a successful stint in Pancrase in Japan. More recently he has been an instructor at Team Quest in Murrieta, California, and has been lead cornerman for one of the legends of MMA and also a former Greco-Roman Olympian, Dan Henderson.
We spoke with Heath Sims by phone Wednesday about his new position. He explained why he decided to accept it and move to Singapore, and the growth of both wrestling and MMA in Asia. We discussed the transition that fighters without wrestling backgrounds must make to learn wrestling for MMA. We also discussed some of the problems facing wrestling and how it has not fully taken advantage of the success so many wrestlers have had in MMA.
Heath will be departing for Singapore in February, and explained how his involvement with Evolve MMA is an important and historic step forward for MMA in Asia.
